Odd Fellowship, based upon the guides of Friendship, Love and Truth, is founded on the great principle of humanity. All members obligate themselves to carry out this worthy principle which means the rich must help the poor, the educated must instruct the ignorant and the well must nurse the sick.

This foundation was laid out in the year A.D. 55 during the reign of Nero, when certain groups of men banded together through mutual acquaintance for fidelity to men as well as their country. Nero called them "Odd Citizens" and later during A.D. 79, Titus Caesar called them "Odd Fellow".

Some of the earlier records show that the Odd Fellows Fraternity arose in Great Britain in the early 1700s and at the turn of the 19th century, several orders of Odd Fellows existed in England. Thomas Wildey, an Odd Fellow from England, is known as the founder of Odd Fellowship in North America. With four other members, Washington Lodge No. 1 was organized in Baltimore, Maryland on April 26, 1819.

The first Lodge in Alberta was instituted in Calgary in 1884, and Beaver Lodge No. 27 was instituted in Stavely on February 27, 1907. There were six charter members: A.E. Rodgers, Thomas F. Franks, J.D. Park, James Lyall, A.D. Kellog and G. Severson. Sixteen members were initiated at the first meeting: J. Beatty, L.A. Ostrum, W. Severson, Rev. Darling, J.E. Henderson, R. Brand, Tom Wilson, L. Hewitt, C.G. Murrell, H. Linton, J.M. Donlevy, W. Sherman, M.H. Arnestad, Tom Guy, J.W. Wilford and Dr. Thompson.

Beaver Lodge No. 27 purchased five acres of land (NW corner of NW 8-14-27-4) from W.G. Enquist on February 17, 1919 and continues to own and maintain the I.O.O.F Cemetery on this property as well as maintain St. Vincent's Catholic Cemetery north of Stavely.

During 1947 and 1948, the members of Beaver Lodge No. 27 volunteered their labour and built a large hall. A year later, the Lodge found the cost of taxes on the four lots and the building too high and subsequently turned over ownership to the newly formed Community Hall Board.
